Isabella Mitchell

c. 1750 - ?

Abram Yeudall junior's mother appears on his death certificate as Isabella Yeudall, maiden name Mitchell, (deceased). This may be taken as indicating that she was married to Abram Yeudall senior at some time subsequent to their son's birth, though no record is known, and from other evidence it is seriously doubted.

Note also that 'Isabella' is rendered 'Isbell' on the entry for Abram junior's birth. The one Isabel Mitchell known to have been born in Sorn Parish during the relevant period was baptised on the 22nd of May 1745:

'May the 22 was baptifed… as also Isabel Mitchel lawfully procreated by William Mitchel in Dalmhead of Gilmilfcrooft and Chriftian Mitchel Spoufes'

Forebears

Isabella's father is identified as William Mitchell on the OPR entry for the baptism of her son Abram.

During the decades leading up to the birth of Abram Yeudall in 1780, there were two men named William Mitchell known to have been living simultaneously in Sorn Parish. Coincidentally, the wives of both had the first name Christian. One of these was Christian Valance, and the maiden name of the other was apparently Mitchell. Neither wedding appears to have been entered in the OPR. As the children of the two couples were often baptised close together, there is no possibility that these were the same couple.

Note that only William Mitchell and Christian Mitchell are known to have had a daughter named Isabel, though the possibility that William Mitchell and Christian Valance, who were for a number of years associated with South Blairkip farm, had a daughter of that name whose birth and baptism they did not record can certainly not be excluded.

The Sorn OPR records that one William Mitchell, the son of Robert Mitchell and Janet Cowan, spouses, was baptised on the 12th of May 1717, but there is no way of knowing which of the two men of this name this was, if either.

Christian Mitchell was baptised on the 15th of July 1716:

'July 15 was baptized Chriftian Mitchell Lawfully procreated betwixt Alecr Mitchell in Plucks (moalling?) & Isobel Jarbies Spoufes'

Though it cannot be established with certainty, this was probably the same Christian Mitchell who later married William Mitchell.

Alexander Mitchell and Isabel (Jarvis?) had been married on the 5th of December 1700:

'Decembr 5 wer marryed Alexr Mitcel wright in (Dalorlind?) & Isobel Gerbies lawfl Daughter to Andrew Gerbies in Tinker-hill (Tinkornhill?). Winteffes John Mitchell of (Datilland?) & the faid Andrew Jerbies.'

Note that Isobel’s father is recorded as Andrew (Jarvis?). If all the links are established, then Andrew Jarvis is the great-great-grandfather of Abram Yeudall, born 1780. Andrew Jarvis – Isobel Jarvis – Christian Mitchell – Isabel Mitchell – Abram Yeudall.

Brothers and Sisters

Isabel Mitchell, born 1745, had three known sisters and a brother, baptised as follows: Janet, on the 6th of March 1743; Christian, on the 5th of May 1751; Jean, on the 7th of April 1754; and Alexander, on the 18th of November 1759, all in Sorn Parish.
