Grace Kay
27th December 1831 - 24th April 1911
Grace Kay was born in Monimail, Fife, on the 27th of December 1831 and baptised on the 12th of
February 1832.
She was married to widower Abram Yeudall of Galston on the 31st of May 1859 at the Manse of Dunbog, Fife. Grace was twenty-seven years of age and a maidservant (spinster). Her address was entered as Holmes, Galston.
Grace died on the 24th of April 1911. She died at Gargieston, Galston, and her age was given as eighty. The cause of death was certified as 'malignant disease of stomach', from which she had been suffering for two months. The death was registered on the same day and the informant was John A. Yeudall, her son.
Forebears
The names of Grace's parents were given on her marriage certificate as John Kay, a labourer, and Cecilia Kay, MS Watson. John was a farm grieve, according to Grace's death certificate. The death certificate of his wife, Cecilia, designates him as a 'farm foreman'.
An entry relating to 'Kay John Monimail & Cicilia (sic) Watson in this Parish' appears in the Register of Marriages for Logie, Fife, dated the 20th of December 1828.
John Kay, a 'Labourer', 'Married to Cecil Watson', died on the 24th of May 1862 at (Kinsheath?), Parish of Creich, Fife. He was 68 years of age. The informant was Andrew Kay, John's son.
John's parents were entered as John Kay, a labourer, and Grace Kay MS Gourly.
'Cecilia Hutton Watson Kay', the 'Widow of John Kay' died on the 17th of January 1895 at 20, Barr Street, Galston. Her age was entered as 90 and the cause of death was certified simply as 'old age'. The informant was Abram Yeudall, her son-in-law.
Cecilia's parents were entered as Alexander Watson, a ploughman, and Jane Watson MS Aitken. Both were deceased.
It is probable that her mother's first and middle names 'Cecilia Hutton' hold a clue as to the identity of one or other of Grace's maternal great-grandmothers.
Brothers and Sisters
Cecilia Kay was entered as a witness at Grace's wedding. This may refer to her mother or else to a sister of that name who has yet to be otherwise identified. Andrew Kay (evidently the bride's younger brother, born c. 1840) was the other witness at the ceremony.
Andrew was listed as a boarder in the household of his brother-in-law Abram Yeudall in the 1861 census, in Barr Street, Galston. He was a joiner, unmarried, aged 20, and his place of birth was entered as Dunbog, Fife.
As already noted, Andrew was the informant on his father's death certificate in 1862.
